University of Liverpool School of Medicine select Optime Timetabler to Manage their Student Doctor Clinical Placements

The School of Medicine at the University of Liverpool has a long and rich history. It was established in 1834 and has been at the forefront of medical practice and research for over 180 years. Liverpool is one of the largest medical education providers in the UK, training and developing doctors throughout their careers, enabling them to use the latest advances to provide exceptional care to their patients.

An essential component of the Medicine course are the clinical placements provided by the School’s partner NHS Trusts. Placements within the NHS are crucial to Student Doctors’ training and development, but also add valuable capacity to NHS provision. It is therefore hugely important to effectively manage the complex timetables provided during these clinical placements to achieve optimal performance for both Student Doctors and NHS Trusts.

The School of Medicine approached EventMAP to evaluate Optime Placement, a tool designed to assist educators to manage work placements and internships, with a view of providing a technology solution for managing clinical placement timetables. After a brief discussion, it was suggested that given the level of complexity required by the university, Optime Timetabler would be the best fit. With its advanced algorithms, Timetabler has proven the right choice. Both student and staff feedback has been positive, not only because of its intelligent scheduling outcomes, but also its clear and intuitive user interface. It is now being used by 14 of the Liverpool School of Medicine’s partner NHS Trusts to provide timetables to Student Doctors while on clinical placement.

Due to the unique nature of medical practice, clinical placement timetabling has long been recognised as a complex task to manage. The sector has not been well served by solution providers when it comes to addressing this complexity, which has often resulted in a lot of manual intervention.
